| On my first night at Penang, I found my way to
Chinatown for dinner. I was going to try their special dish but after finding
out that the restaurant specializes in frog legs, I opted for less exciting
food. The following day, my tour of Penang started at Kek Lok Si temple. |

|
The temple is located on top of a hill and is
suppose to have 10 thousand Buddhas in the pagoda. I guess you'll have to
take their word for it. |
 |
|
A
short drive up the hill from the temple is the huge statue of Lady of
Mercy. The whole area was under construction but I managed to get right
to the bottom of the statue.
Next stop; Penang Hill. There are 2 ways to get to the top of this hill
which overlooks the city; 4 hours hike or 30 min rail. I chose the more
sensible and wimpy way. BTW, this is quite a big hill. ~ 2730 ft above
sea level.

After
Penang Hill., I stopped by the Wat Chaiya Mangkalaram. Its a Buddhist
temple base on Thai architecture which houses a 33 meter long gold-plated
reclining Buddha. Boy, there seem to be lot of reclining Buddhas in Southeast
Asia.
Anyway, I couldn't take a picture of the Buddha inside. They have their
own photographer inside and won't let you take your own pictures.
|
Just
across the street from Wat Chaiya Mangkalaram is another temple. This one
is of Burmese architecture. They have statues of Buddha representing the
various countries in Asia. Their facial structure as well as their build
is suppose to resemble the different races. |
|
Well, that's about it for me in Malaysia. There were enough sites to
see in Penang to keep me busy. Also, I was able to go to the night market
for dinner and bargain hunting.
After a couple of days in Penang, I headed back to Hong Kong before ending
my Asia tour with a final trip to Thailand.
